Since the 1800’s, Washington County, New York, has been a welcoming home for production of wool. In the mid-1800s the County was one New York’s major producers of Merino wool. Now wool and other fiber production (Alpaca, Cashmere, Angora) is enjoying a renaissance, you can see on the Washington County Fiber Tour.
Bob and I invite you to stop at our farm. (one of the original members of the Fiber Tour. Farm #10on the web site.) You’ll see our March nd April Romney and medium-wool crossbred lambs and their dams, and can learn how we raise our sheep, which live on pasture for most of the year. We feature carefully prepared white, natural colored and moorit (brown wool) fleeces.along with beautiful sheep, and frozen cuts of our own lamb. Bring a spinning wheel Saturday morning and join the Roc Day Spinning Guild.
Also available on our farm are natural colored yearling Romney rams.
Many fiber farmers exhibit their animals and products regionally and nationally, where they have won major awards at events like the Eastern States Exposition (W. Springfield, MA), the NYS Sheep and Wool Festival (Rhinebeck, NY), the New England Cashmere Goat Show, the Empire Alpaca Extravaganza, and the Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival (right here in our County)
